Mindfulness is the consistent process of gaining awareness of mental events in the present moment and responding intentionally and skillfully to inner and outer experiences—such as thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and external events—by engaging with the past event in the present moment, discovering clarity, discernment, and compassion rooted in love, towards us and others.

By viewing life through the lens of mindfulness, we recognize the potential for transformation in challenges, the capacity for joy, love, and aliveness in every experience, deepen our spiritual connection with life, and find the courage and willingness to take meaningful action to improve the world rooted in love, wisdom, and a deep sense of interconnection. Mindfulness transforms our awareness of suffering, or in other words, discomfort, distress, or pain, into purposeful, loving action.

To fully embrace the practice of mindfulness, it’s essential to bring an attitudinal approach that helps us develop qualities to guide our thoughts, emotions, and actions. These qualities enhance our well-being, support our growth, and deepen our connection with ourselves, others, and the world around us.

These qualities are meant to be kept in mind throughout our daily lives, as well as during formal or informal meditation practices. By bringing mindfulness into every action, conversation, and moment, we transform our daily experiences into a living meditation, aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with our deeper values, intentions, and the present moment.

Together, we’ll explore nine essential qualities that form the foundation of mindfulness practice.

As you express these qualities in your everyday life, you’ll notice they are useful to foster in your relationships—with your children, your family, your partner or spouse, your colleagues at work, and your friends.

Whether we’re aware of our experiences and how we respond to life’s challenges of life ultimately determines the quality of our lives. Fostering qualities like awareness, discernment, compassion, and love in your everyday life transforms the way you engage with life. Awareness helps you truly see and hear the people in your life, recognizing their needs, emotions, and perspectives. Discernment allows you to respond thoughtfully and wisely. Compassion creates a safe space for others to express themselves without fear of judgment. Love emerges as the natural byproduct of mindfulness.
